If you are serious about a career in Emergency Management, you need to speak the language of FEMA and the federal government. The great news? The entire foundational curriculum is available for free through FEMA’s Independent Study (IS) Program.

Whether you’re starting out or transitioning from another field, completing this list of courses is the absolute minimum requirement recruiters expect to see on your resume.

The Core Foundation (ICS/NIMS/NRF)

These are universally required for almost any EM, public safety, or response role:

  • IS 100.c: Introduction to the Incident Command System
  • IS 200.c: Basic Incident Command System for Initial Response
  • IS 700.b: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System
  • IS 800.d: National Response Framework, An Introduction

  • IS 230.e: Fundamentals of Emergency Management
  • IS 235.c: Emergency Planning
  • IS 240.c: Leadership and Influence

  • IS 244.b: Developing and Managing Volunteers
  • IS 1300: Introduction to Continuity of Operations Planning (COOP)
